Today I was watching one of my 8 year old's favorite shows on Disney and part of the story line was about one of the girl's boyfriends was cheating on her...?!?!?!? Seriously Disney this is what you have lined up for my 8 year old now? Why should that even be apart of the plot? That sure doesn't help me in stopping my daughter into already acting like a preteen!
Sure they have good shows for toddlers but this is what they give me for elementary age kids. Not cool Disney not cool. And you know what even Disney isn't the only one who does this. Nickelodeon is guilty of it too. Between iCarly, Victorious on Nickelodeon and Wizards of Waverly Place and Good Luck Charlie on Disney it is becoming glaringly obvious that PBS will be my channel of choice for the girls!
PBS offers learning in a nice innocent way that children need nowadays. Never when I was a kid did Rainbow Brite worry about a boy cheating on her or did My Little Pony. In fact I think I might do a little searching on the internet for classic Mickey Mouse episodes. I do like when they will show small clips of that in between shows and Taylor likes it too.
So please pay attention to what your kids watch because while you may not be ready to explain something to them just yet if you aren't careful you may not have a choice!
I'm with you, I really dislike all the kids shows these days. We don't have cable but we still get all those same shows on Netflix. I like the Qubo channel. One show I loved when I was younger was Reading Rainbow, I've been thinking about buying the DVD's for my kids. It would be so nice if they would bring back all those great shows we watched when we were kids. I think the media has a lot to do with our kids growing up too fast.
ReplyDeleteI haven't heard of the Qubo channel but I think I'll look it up! I did some searching for tv shows on amazon and I am going to make some purchases soon. And unfortunately TV is only a part of why kids are growing up so fast :(
DeleteI despise Disney, and Nick to the point that I no longer bother with cable. I now buy dvds ( used to use Netflix until we moved here. Netflix isn't available to use yet). Mostly my boys watch older anime's, Disney DVDs, and Leapfrog videos. On the bright side, have you seen the new My Little Pony show? It's amazing, kid friendly and honestly an overall good show :)
ReplyDeleteYes I have been thinking that is not such a bad idea lately! I haven't seen the My Little Pony show!! I loved that when I was a kid so I am going to have to do some searching for Taylor to see it! Thanks!
DeleteSome kids shows are so crazy, I feel like I'm on crack just from watching them. Stopping by from Cafemom. I am a new follower. Hope to see you at True Aim!
ReplyDeleteYea and some of them I think...what is the point of this show...this is filling my kid's head with nonsense! Thanks for stopping by!
DeleteYet another reason I'm glad we don't have cable and that PBS is the only option for my kids! It is sad really, what has been put out there enabling our kids to "grow up" so damn fast! Thanks for linking up again this week!!!
ReplyDeleteI fully agree with this post. We are very aware of what we let our 3-year-old watch. We don't have cable, only Netflix instant watch. Growing up I primarily watched PBS, we had cable for a little while and the shows they had on Nick Jr. then were great. I really miss shows from when I grew up because they were so much calmer and were more focused on teaching children, not it just seems like television shows are trying to keep a child's attention.
